Orthodontics is an often misunderstood branch of dentistry. This two part series will cover orthodontics and why you may need an orthodontist even as an adult. When someone says the word braces, it makes people think of awkward teenage years, and insults like “metal-mouth.” However, braces have come a long way since then. For more information on braces, be sure to read part two of this series as well.
What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics, according to this article excerpt from Wikipedia is: “Orthodontics, formerly orthodontia (from Greek orthos “straight or proper or perfect”; and odous “tooth”) is the first specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.” [READ MORE]Orthodontics: The Future is Clear and Bright for Braces
Invisalign braces are clear, and a lot more unobtrusive than black metal braces. Some braces are mounted to the back of the teeth, not the front. These are called lingual braces, and no it’s not because they speak, it’s because of their proximity to the tongue. So metal braces aren’t always on the list of options.
In fact, it is only very rarely that the nickle metal braces that most people are familiar with are even prescribed by an orthodontist. What may surprise some people is that some braces are even made of gold plated steel. How’s that for a flashy smile? So, smile already! If you’ve been putting off a visit to the orthodontist, there’s no need to worry.
