Is it time to get dentures? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Whether or not you need dentures is determined by your dentist as well as your own unique situation.
Are Dentures Right For Me?
When most people think of dentures, chances are mental images of elderly people and very scary and fake looking false teeth probably come to mind.
The reality is that dentures are diverse and much more common than most people think. They are a potentially viable choice for anyone who has lost one or more teeth. It all starts with a dental exam.
Missing teeth are often a trope of low-brow comedy shows, but they really are nothing to laugh about. Because of poor oral hygiene, tooth decay, or some other accident or disease, sometimes, people end up losing one or more teeth. Missing teeth can lead to further oral health problems as well as causing problems with chewing, biting, swallowing, and even speaking.
The Types and Uses of Dentures
Dentures fill in gaps left by a lost tooth or teeth, restoring both the appearance as well as the functioning of a patient’s mouth. Dentures are usually a plate made from either acrylic or metal fitted to the roof of your mouth or in the case of lower dentures, your jaw. False teeth, usually acrylic or ceramic, are attached to this plate. In the old days, dentures looked unnatural. They were an odd grayish white color, and were easily pegged as being false teeth. Modern day dentures however, are color-matched to your natural teeth so that they appear natural.
There are many different types of dentures available, depending on the patient. Partials used in cases where only a few teeth are missing. Using small metal clasps, a partial denture is supported on your existing teeth and by your jaws and gums.
Complete dentures, however, replace all of your teeth in either your upper or lower jaw. Some dentures are inserted immediately after removal of all of the teeth and the gums, while others require time for the gums to heal.
In some cases your dentist might recommend an overdenture, which is inserted over intact teeth or roots, adding to the support of the denture.
Are dentures the right choice for you? Dentures are only one possible solution to the problem of missing teeth. Others include bridges and implants.
If you’re missing teeth, your dentist can discuss all your treatment options with you, including what’s involved and the cost associated with each, and together you can decide which is most appropriate.
It all starts, however, by scheduling an appointment with your dentist in Gilbert.
