We’re often asked by our patients: “how often should I clean my teeth?”  Well, first off, that depends entirely on your definition of cleaning your teeth.   If you mean brushing and flossing your teeth, you should be doing that every day.  Brushing your teeth at least once a day, and brushing and flossing at least once a day too.  A good way to split it all up is to brush your teeth in the morning and brush/floss in the evening.  As for teeth cleaning a good rule of thumb is twice a year.
As to why you should get teeth cleaning done,  there are several reasons, and only a few are due to appearance.  First off, cleaning your teeth helps to remove tartar and more importantly the bacteria that are under it that are responsible for tooth decay.  Also, teeth cleaning is a good follow up to a dental exam.

Dental Exams

Quite often after a dental exam, your family dentist will likely recommend that you get teeth cleaning done, particularly if it has been a decade or more since your last cleaning. We see it a lot of the time.  Sometimes people put visiting a dentist off as long as they can, but this isn’t a good idea.  Sometimes problems spiral out of control, and what starts as a simple dental exam and teeth cleaning ends up being oral surgeries and root canals.
So remember, that dental care begins with you.  Then it’s just a matter of scheduling an appointment with a family dentist.
This concludes part three of our series on family dentists.  Be sure to read part one and part two as well.
