As your dentist in Gilbert, I’d be remiss in my duties if I didn’t offer some simple oral hygiene tips.

Oral Hygiene Tips

Oral hygiene is all about knowing what to do as well as what not to do. First off, start with clean teeth for oral health.  Bacteria don’t thrive in clean areas, they need a medium (plaque usually).  The most vulnerable areas of your mouth are your tongue, and the places where your teeth and gums meet.   As to how much you should brush, is there such a thing as brushing your teeth too much?  Yes and no.
The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice daily.  Some people are more fastidious and brush after every meal.  However, if you brush too much you can start to chip away at the enamel of your teeth which can also cause your gums to get inflamed and infected as well.  What is more important is how much time you spend brushing your teeth.  So, make sure you take a bit of time both in the morning and in the evening to thoroughly clean your teeth.  It’s also important to use the right tools for the job.
Fluoride Toothpaste and Brushing Tips
Fluoride toothpaste is necessary.  You also want to make sure you get a soft-bristled tooth brush, particularly if you have any sort of sensitive mouth.  Battery operated toothbrushes are more efficient in removing plaque and fighting gingivitis, but you can get comparable results with just a regular toothbrush as well.
When you’re brushing, do it at an angle, and target the places where your teeth and gums meet.  You want to remember to brush each surface of each tooth.  A good way to do this is to start with the front surfaces of your teeth, starting with the top left side of your jaw, then working around to the other side. Next, you want to hit the biting surfaces and finally the backs of your teeth.  For great breath, brush your tongue as well.  Always rinse your toothbrush after you brush and store it uncovered, in an upright position.  . Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible.  The next part of this series will expand on oral hygiene tips and cover flossing.  For now, remember, you are responsible for taking care of your mouth.  You can’t hire anyone to do it for you. As your family dentist, I hope these tips are useful.
