What Are New Fillings Made Of?

What are new fillings made of?  According to WebMD:
Today, several dental filling materials are available. Teeth can be filled with gold; porcelain; silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper); or tooth-colored, plastic, and glass materials called composite resin fillings. Each filling type has pluses and minuses.  Cast gold fillings are prettier, but also more expensive and they require multiple fittings.  Also if you mix gold and silver fittings, you’re going to have to get used to galvanic shock, which is an unpleasant shock when gold and silver touch.  However gold fittings last a lot longer than silver ones do.  About a decade on the average.  They’re also tougher, and don’t require nearly as much destruction of health tooth tissue for the filling to take.  Silver can last a long time, is tough enough to chew with, and is much cheaper than gold, however, it is also not as aesthetically pleasing as gold is.  In addition, healthy parts of the tooth must often be removed to make a space large enough to hold the amalgam filling. They are also a bit more prone to cracking. Other filling types are porcelain and resin composites, each with their own pluses and minuses as well. So with all of that information, which fillings are right for you?

Let Your Dentist Guide You

When you want to replace your fillings, or you have to get a new filling for a cavity, the final word rests with you, however, you should listen to the advice of your dentist.  She or he will be able to tell you what fillings would work best for you, your budget, your insurance, and your particular cavity situation.
So remember, take care of  your teeth.  Simply brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning will help to reduce your risk of cavities.  If you need fillings, however, don’t let your teeth get too bad.  Because then, you’re looking at a tooth extraction and not just getting a filling.
