What are preventative dental procedures?  Well first off there is the standard of any family dental practice: the dental exam.  A dental exam is designed to check the overall health of your mouth. After all, it’s not just your teeth, it’s your gums as well.
Periodontal care is the focus of the gums, but how do you know when you need it?  Simple, as results of a dental exam.  A dental exam looks for soreness or inflammation of the gums, as well as problems with your teeth.   Dental exams also determine the next level of preventative dental care:  a periodic teeth cleaning.

Why You Should Get Teeth Cleaning Done

Why should you get teeth cleaning done?  Well, the bacteria that cause halitosis, or bad breath, are also the same bacteria that can cause cavities as well as eat away at the structures of your teeth.  What a lot of people don’t know is that your mouth is one of the systems of your body that can cause a cascade of other problems.  Poor oral hygiene can lead to gingivitis, which in turn can in turn contribute to heart disease.  Yes, really! However, if you start with teeth cleaning, you’re not only removing all the tartar buildup, you’re getting rid of the bacteria below the gum-line.  If your mouth is healthier, your immune system isn’t as taxed, which in turn leads to better health as well.
So remember that an ounce of prevention means that you won’t have to do more severe dental procedures like tooth extraction, fillings, or the often dreaded root canal.  So where do you start?  Simple.  Call your family dentist to arrange an appointment.
