Your Teeth Are More Complicated Than You Think

A lot of times, people don’t know what makes up a tooth. Most people think that a tooth is just bone. It’s not. In fact, the bone portion of your teeth is only a thin outer section. The center of your tooth is made of pulp and has nerves and veins in it as well. Since they are more complicated than you think, teeth need preventative dentistry to keep them in your mouth.
Something as simple as annual or bi-annual teeth cleaning can help to protect your teeth, especially one of the most important parts of your teeth: your tooth enamel.

Tooth Enamel Doesn’t Regrow if Lost

Your tooth enamel is a translucent surface. It protects your tooth’s pulp, bone and nerve from damage, but most people didn’t know that it is always under attack. Bacteria in your mouth are constantly multiplying and trying to literally eat through your tooth enamel. Once the enamel is breached that leads to a cascading series of problems. And this is another misconception we’ve encountered at our dental practice in Gilbert: tooth enamel can regrow. For the record, no. It’ can’t. So let’s say you don’t get teeth cleaning done, and you rely solely on brushing and flossing your teeth.
You know that filmy feeling on your teeth if you haven’t brushed them in a while? That’s bacterial waste known as plaque. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth as often as you should, over time, plaque form a mineral veneer on your teeth called tartar that has active bacteria cultures under it that continue to eat away at your teeth until a cavity forms.
At the same time, these bacteria are beneath your gumline, causing your gums to draw back. As a result, this leads to gum disease. Over time, the damage caused by bacteria causes you to lose your teeth. If you’re lucky, when your teeth fall out, they’ll fall out cleanly, with no infection or additional problems. But that rarely if ever happens.
So be proactive about your dental care. Start with a dental exam, and get some X-rays done. to see if there are any problems.
And listen to your dentist. Especially when she or he recommends teeth cleaning.
